The Great Cascade is one of the biggest fountain ensembles in the world. It includes more than sixty fountains, more than 250 statues and reliefs. Water falls over the marble, tuff- and shell-faced stairways (8m wide) and trickles down into a vast pool. The pool is decorated like a fairy lake with pagan gods sitting along its banks. The stairway parapets are decorated with gilt statues and fountains in the shape of vases. There are two grottos on the slope of the terrace between the stairways - the Lower and the Upper Grottos, orlhe Great and the Small, the interiors of which were designed to resemble natural caves. Tne adjusted and harmonious architectonics, the great number of sculptures sparkling with gilt, the richness of the facing, the power and variety of water streams make the Great Cascade the acme of fountain art.
